The Design

As mentioned in the last post the design of the tiny is greatly inspired by the barns I have seen, experienced and torn down over the past 6 years. I feel really good about the broad strokes of the design and excited at the potential it has. However, there are still some details need to be developed further.

The first area that needs more attention is the center of the tiny house where the kitchen is located. The idea for the area opposite the kitchen cabinets, on what will be the west wall, is that it will be the “dining” area with some sort of table and movable seating. I would like to design something custom for a table as I am thinking it needs to be something more than just a fold up/down table that I have seen many times before. The bathroom wall that the sliding barn door/ladder to the loft will cover is another opportunity for something custom and unique as well. My current thinking is some sort of drawer or recessed shelving for extra storage. With the kitchen above the base cabinets I haven’t decided if there needs to be wall cabinets, open shelving or just an old framed map to make the place mine.

Storage is another area of concern at the moment. I don’t plan on having very much in terms of physical possessions, but I feel I still may be a bit short on storage for what I do need. I thought of putting a mini loft over the sofa in the living area. I am afraid however this may cause the couch area to feel very dark and confined. I also may look at adding some sort of storage to the bedroom loft, perhaps shelves or cabinets on the sides of the beds.

At this point in the process I feel comfortable in the planning I have done. I do realize however, that everything may change once I get the trailer and see the actual dimensions and specifics. I am by no means stuck on this being the final design and accept the fact that many things will change during the planning and building stages. As long as I have a good design concept and am able to stay flexible and true to the original concept a great house will be the end result.

I have created a flyover in sketch-up of the design as well. Let me know what you think.
